Committing to the Future

The idea for Altruistic Events was a concept in my head, a few years back. Last year, I started to get all of the ducks in a row and finally formed the business formally. In the time since then, I’ve spent a lot of time doing research, working on proposals, getting a logo I loved and all the other fun things that come along with starting a new business. Then, I felt like I hit a bit of a wall. What do I do next? Where do I go? How do I get the word out so that we can get some events going?Enter Kate from Philly PR Girl. I found her website because of some event pictures she posted on Twitter and decided to reach out. We set up a meeting and she was a joy to speak to with great advice to share. She was pivotal in what I believe is going to be a an “A-ha!” moment for me with regard to AE. Simply stated, her best advice was to increase my online visibility. I couldn’t believe I didn’t think of it before! I’m personally active on social media and understand it’s impact on the world, how could I not think I had a place in that? Part of me thinks that, I thought for sure the social media presence of the business would be after we started to do many events. I didn’t think about generating interest beforehand.

I’ll have to admit, I was absolutely overwhelmed at the idea of starting a blog for AE. After all, the web is full of blogs, what would set mine apart? I was worried what sort of content I’d be able to share that people would care about and so began my search. I got so inspired by what I saw, on Tumblr in particular. When I entered words like Charity and Philanthropy, I was so encouraged by what I saw and it’s impact on me was greater than just trying to figure out how I fit on the big bad Internet. People are sharing about how they’re donating both time and money in some amazing ways! It’s easy to get bombarded nowadays by negativity in the media, but when you go looking, people are doing some really amazing things in this world!

I, now, don’t feel so overwhelmed about content. There’s plenty of news to share and people to highlight out there. I’m also excited for what getting to know these people and their stories will bring to AE. I have a strong feeling with how much smaller the world is because of social media, we’re going to make some lasting relationships that will be help AE to continually meet it’s goal create charity events, both online and in the world, that help leave an impact and help make it a better place.

Til next time!
Nicole
